🟡 The Myth of Kurdish Freedom
Many outside Iraq believe that the Kurdistan Region is a safe space — a democratic corner in a troubled country. But this image hides a darker reality.
In recent years, the Kurdish authorities in Erbil and Duhok have violently cracked down on peaceful dissent. In 2021, five journalists and activists were sentenced to six years in prison. They were accused on vague charges of “spying and destabilising the region.” Human rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, condemned the lack of due process.

لە ساڵانی ڕابردوودا دەسەڵاتی کوردی لە هەولێر و دهۆک بە توندوتیژی سەرکوتکردنی ناڕەزایەتی ئاشتیانەیان کردووە. لە ساڵی ٢٠٢١دا پێنج ڕۆژنامەنووس و چالاکوان سزای شەش ساڵ زیندانییان بەسەردا سەپێندرا. ئەوان بە تۆمەتی ناڕوون بە “سیخوڕیکردن و ناسەقامگیرکردنی ناوچەکە” تۆمەتبار کرابوون. گروپەکانی مافی مرۆڤ لەوان ڕێکخراوی لێبوردنی نێودەوڵەتی و هیومان ڕایتس وۆچ، نەبوونی ڕێکاری یاسایییان شەرمەزار کرد.

🔴 I Saw the Fear Myself
When I lived in Erbil, I saw how quickly someone could become a target. This was not for breaking the law, but for asking questions. I remember friends whispering complaints behind closed doors, afraid someone would hear.
I once attended a protest about unpaid salaries — nothing more than a peaceful gathering. Within an hour, the square was filled with armed men. We scattered. The next day, two teachers were arrested from their homes.
I left Iraq with that fear still in my bones. Today, I write openly from the UK.
کاتێک لە هەولێر دەژیام، بینیم کە کەسێک چەندە خێرا دەتوانێت ببێتە ئامانج. ئەمەش بۆ شکاندنی یاسا نەبوو، بەڵکو بۆ پرسیارکردن بوو. بیرمە هاوڕێیان لە پشت دەرگا داخراوەکانەوە گلەیییان دەچرپاند، لە ترسی ئەوەی کەسێک بیبیستێت.
جارێک بەشداریم لە ناڕەزایەتییەکدا کرد سەبارەت بە نەدانی مووچە – هیچی تر لە کۆبوونەوەیەکی ئاشتیانە زیاتر نەبوو. لە ماوەی یەک کاتژمێردا گۆڕەپانەکە پڕ بوو لە چەکدار. ئێمە پەرش و بڵاو بووینەوە. ڕۆژی دواتر دوو مامۆستا لە ماڵەکانیانەوە دەستگیرکران.
عێراقم بەجێهێشت بەو ترسەی کە هێشتا لە ئێسکەکانمدایە. ئەمڕۆ، لە بەریتانیا بە ئاشکرا دەنووسم.
⚠️ Why This Matters
The Kurdish authorities claim to protect freedoms. But the facts say otherwise:
- Over 100 journalists have been detained or threatened since 2019
- Many activists report torture or abuse in custody
- Protest permits are often denied or suppressed
🗣️ My Voice, Their Silence
I am not a threat. I am not calling for violence. I am simply telling the truth.
That is enough to put me at risk.
I speak now so that others still living under repression can one day speak freely too.
